Content: The U.S.-Israel war on Iran and Lebanon is devastating people around the globe. Working class people in all countries are seeing their real incomes slashed by inflation. The world’s richest nation cuts Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP while funneling funds to the rich and the military that protects their profits.
Thousands murdered in Iran with people there already pushed into desperate poverty by U.S. economic sanctions. Huge price increases in petrochemical fertilizers causing hunger if not outright famine for millions in South Asia as the multiple effects of the climate crisis are accelerated by the explosions of war.
Both political parties say they want peace when they’re not in White House, but launch bombings, wars and coups once they’ve hoodwinked voters into electing them. From Palestine to Venezuela to Cuba to Iran, they say they oppose each other’s war moves but tacitly agree about the U.S.’s “right” to control other countries and their resources.
With the defeat of the U.S. in Vietnam a half century ago, working people around the globe, including here in the U.S., showed that they could end a war. And for a decade after the U.S. defeat, the “Vietnam Syndrome” stayed the hand of U.S. rulers from launching subsequent major wars.
Building an independent anti-war movement of the power that stopped the US War on Vietnam will be far from easy, but there are no shortcuts. Giving any credence to Democrats’ or Republicans’ “anti-war” words saps the energy of our movement when what is needed is more pressure on whomever is in power.
We invite you to join us in helping build a movement which can truly put working people’s needs first. Please join the Chicago Committee Against War & Racism at our next in-person meeting, 6 pm, Wednesday, May 13 in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood.
