Content: “Reading the world always precedes reading the word.” — Paulo Freire In 1963, Brazilian educator Paulo Freire helped hundreds of rural farmworkers learn to read, write and vote in just weeks. The powerful saw it as a threat. After the U.S.-backed coup, he was jailed and forced into exile. Today, we’re flooded with misinformation, confusion and noise. Freire’s lesson matters more than ever: when working people learn together to read the world, we can change it. Join us for a screening of Reading the World (PBS), followed by a community discussion on political education and what Freire’s work means for our struggles in the 25th Ward and beyond.
