30th Anniversary of the Deadly Chicago 1995 Heat Wave

This is the anniversary period of the 1995 heat wave in Chicago that went up to 106 degrees Fahrenheit with a 126 degree heat index, and killed well over 800 people, mainly in the poorer neighborhoods, and with a high rate of Black victims.

Chicago still does not have easily accessible cooling centers available 24/7, especially in the poorest, most vulnerable neighborhoods. Nor does it have other means to be sure to check up on the well-being of residents and offer relief as needed.

As usual, the government of the rich is not geared up to seriously help the problems faced by the working class and poor people. This can be seen in the lack of serious enough preparations for further heat waves that are sure to be on the way given global warming/climate change that is causing more extreme weather all over. There are no serious government efforts to beat back the global warming caused largely by U.S. polluting industries.

Peoples Response Network is an action group that is seeking to have the City of Chicago deal with this problem. There will be a press conference, dramatic art installation and meeting to address this problem and what to do this Friday, July 11. Please join in if you can.
