Join NWSOFA-Indivisible this Thursday at 7:00 pm CT on Zoom for a timely and eye-opening presentation with Ed Spire, co-lead of our Restore Our Democracy team and a longtime advocate for protecting and strengthening American democracy. Ed will walk through how today’s Supreme Court has moved far beyond its traditional role as an impartial interpreter of the Constitution, increasingly acting as a political actor that reshapes our laws and our rights from the bench.

Please let us know you will be attending. RSVP here -- https://mobilize.us/s/1BpwWd

In recent terms, the Court has struck down long-standing voting rights protections, opened the floodgates to big money in politics, and limited the tools lower courts can use to stop unconstitutional actions by the president and other officials. These decisions do not simply reflect conservative versus progressive philosophies; they change the basic rules of the game, tilting power toward wealthy interests and the executive branch while weakening checks and balances. Ed will explain how these rulings fit together into a larger pattern of a Court that is stepping outside the law’s guardrails rather than enforcing them.

Ed’s talk will connect the dots between abstract court cases and the real-world impact on communities in Illinois and across the country. From voting rights and gerrymandering to presidential power and the “shadow docket,” he will show how the Court’s recent moves make it harder for ordinary people to hold leaders accountable and easier for extremists to lock in minority rule. Participants will come away with a clearer understanding of what is at stake and why this is a democracy issue, not just a legal one.

Please join NWSOFA-Indivisible’s Restore Our Democracy team on Thursday at 7:00 pm CT and invite friends who are ready to learn more about how the Supreme Court is acting outside the law—and what we can do about it together.
