Content: While you vote on Tuesday, unhoused residents of Legion Park will be forcibly evicted from their homes. On Saturday, Park District Superintendent Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, Chief Homelessness Officer Sendy Soto, and members of the Department of Family & Support Services FINALLY responded to Legion residents’ request to meet- only after we actively disrupted their board meeting this past Wednesday. When pressed, officials conceded the truth: regardless of whether or not unhoused residents of Legion Park have been successfully matched to adequate housing or bridge options, they will be removed, by force if needed, from the park on the 17th. When asked where residents are supposed to go if their housing needs have not been met, Carlos Ramirez-Rosa suggested they move to shelter or another encampment. When one disabled resident expressed concerns about being separated from her caregiver, officials retorted that she ought to be placed in a nursing home. When asked where pets are supposed to go, Sendy Soto suggested they be given to animal control with residents trusting that they be temporarily housed in shelters and returned, while Carlos recommended “the collective {parks for all} figure out an alternative option” urging residents to be grateful for the “opportunity” to be housed by way of eviction. 6:30 AM onwards
